Urban Forestry & Parks

As a profession, Urban Forestry is the systematic management and cultivation of trees in an urban environment for the purpose of improving the urban environment.

Urban Forestry advocates for the role of trees as a critical part of urban infrastructure.

Urban foresters plant and maintain trees, support appropriate tree and forest preservation, conduct research and promote the many benefits trees provide. Urban forestry is practiced by municipal and commercial arborists, municipal and utility foresters, environmental policymakers, city planners, consultants, educators, researchers and community activists. Municipal Parks Departments are typically responsible for the planting, maintenance, and protection of trees on public property including boulevards, center medians, and parks.

Trees play a significant role in our quality of life and provide a positive effect by beautifying our city for the enjoyment of all. Trees contribute to the physical quality of our environment by helping to modify climate, reduce noise and air pollution, and protect our soil and water resources. Urban forests provide shade, beauty, and habitat for wildlife.
