Recycling & Municipal Waste
Brownfield land is commercial or industrial land that is under-used but could be reused or redeveloped. The land must have low levels of hazardous waste contamination and the land must be cleaned or even decontaminated before any redevelopment occurs. These sites usually exist in the industrial area of a city or town where a factory, dry cleaning business, or gas station once operated. The land may sit vacant for decades as a brownfield before being redeveloped.
The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) is also known as Superfund. This U.S. Act dictates how a lot of land must be cleaned of all hazardous waste and contamination. In contrast to a brownfield, a piece of land that has a high level of contaminants must be cleaned according to federal regulation, Superfund. The Act empowers the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to find the party responsible for contaminating land and holds them responsible for any cleanup that may be required. If the party cannot be found, the EPA is held responsible. Superfund aims to protect the health of the public and the environment.
