Rideshare & Flex Programs
Ridesharing is carpooling. Most large cities have rideshare programs with websites to help commuters get in touch with one another. The goal is to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles (SOV) on the road, thereby reducing the overall amount of vehicle emission. It also saves people money by dividing the costs of fuel, parking and maintenance. Additionally, fewer cars on the road means less traffic congestion and a reduction in some of the stress associated with "road rage."
Flex programs are specialized bus routes that pick-up and drop-off passengers at designated stops. Bus routes can be flexible inasmuch as anyone can flag down a bus or ask the driver to drop them off at a specific spot, as long as it is within a set distance (i.e., 3/4 of a mile) of a designated stop. Flex programs are new to many cities but are becoming increasingly popular.
