Renewable Energy
Renewable Energy is energy created from naturally recurring resources, like sunlight, wind, and water. As long as these sources occur, renewable or sustainable energy exists as a very viable option.
Repower America is an American initiative whose objective is securing 100% renewable energy in the next ten years. The supply will not be from one single source, but from a variety of energy sources. Since technology will continue to change, various companies and people will be working together to achieve this goal. The major problem is that the current grid needs to be upgraded. Currently, the grid is a series of independent grids that cannot transfer energy to places that need it. The solution is to build a smart grid which can unify the energy usage and distribute energy to customers near and far.
Industry trends
Aside from directly converting resources into energy, there are many directions in which the renewable energy industry is headed.
1) Sustainable Cities A sustainable city is one that is solely powered by renewable resources. An example of this is Masdar City, Abu Dhabi; by the year 2016 it is on track to be completely solar powered, serving 50,000 citizens and 1,500 businesses
2) Wind Energy: The conversion of wind into energy allows houses and businesses to be powered by one of the world's most frequently occurring resources. Currently, wind power provides 1.5% of the world'??s electricity. In 2008, the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA), a not-for-profit organization, announced their plan to ensure that by 2025, 20% of Canada's energy would be wind energy.
3) Geothermal Energy and Geothermal power is created from converting the Earth's heat energy into electricity. Geothermal is one of the only renewable resources that can provide energy 24 hours a day. It is more reliable than non-renewable options like nuclear and coal-powered energy.
4) Shipping Industry and currently, the shipping industry emits 4% of the worldâ??s greenhouse gases. Various companies are developing technologies that will enable ships to maximize wind energy to power ships.
