Guest Contribution by Michael Ignatieff: Powering Canada on Clean Energy
Special to Green Collar Association
By: Michael Ignatieff, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, leader of the Official Opposition in Canada, senior scholar at University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Harvard University and the University of Toronto.
The whole world is going through a clean energy revolution. The way we create jobs, and power our homes and businesses—not to mention our vehicles—is changing.
Make no mistake: clean energy is no less a transformation than the internet was a decade ago. We’re looking at new opportunities—and Canada must be ready.

Green Around the Collar: It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…No, It’s a…

By: Ron Sokolov, Senior Vice President for Strategic Partnerships
We’re heating up….We’re cooling down. 350 PPM is the absolute maximum saturation the atmosphere can tolerate...450 PPM is just fine. The ecosystem is on the verge of collapse…The economy will collapse to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars if we enact climate change legislation.
So goes the public (and private) debate over global warming and climate change. There’s a lot of misinformation out there as well as a fair share of "the sky is falling" fable that muddies the truth. As difficult as it is to cut through the noise, I try in this piece to lay out a bit about the science, the potential impact, and the policies surrounding global warming.

Green About Green: Why COP15 Matters?

By: Dr. Michael O. Dayan, Green Collar Association Co-founder
Our climate is changing at a rapid pace, and the moment to address it is upon us. This fact is no longer a matter of scientific debate. The current debate concerns finding a mutually agreeable framework for addressing climate change. COP15 is perhaps our best opportunity for developing this framework.
I believe COP15 will be successful if its objective is to reach a strong interim agreement. Such an agreement would enable negotiating partners to ease into their commitments while immediately sending strong market signals required for businesses to unleash the wave of exploration, research, development, and deployment that will lead to a green collar job bonanza.

Why Does Climate Change Matter Again?

Special to Green Collar Association
By: Dr. Hershel Frimer
As we approach 2010 and a global population of 7,000,000,000 , an increasing importance is being placed on controlling our carbon dioxide emissions. In a world that faces matters such as overpopulation, deforestation, widespread pollution, extinctions, desertification, and abject poverty, why do we concern ourselves with climate? Do we not have more important and pressing issues to deal with on the ground? The answers are not simple, but these issues all relate to sustainability. Of course the catch word "sustainability" can be twisted in many ways. However, the commonality between these issues is that they cannot continue with the present trends and it will take international cooperation, if not more, to solve these issues.

College Enrollment Reaches All Time Record
New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that college enrollment has hit an all-time high. So many people are unemployed and re-training has become an attractive option. Concurrently, with the coming boom in renewable energy, new demands for new people with new skills are developing.
Just under 11.5 million students, or 39.6% of all young adults ages 18 to 24, were enrolled in either a two- or four-year college in October 2008. This represents the highest recorded absolute number, as well as percentage number, of students enrolled in academic programs.

Green Gaffes
There's a lot being said about global warming these days. Everyone has an opinion, it seems. We thought we'd start brining you some of the more interesting comments we've read or heard. We'll protect the innocent by altering names, unless of course the clown is a public figure. We hope you enjoy this lighter look at things, and please feel free to share with us your own, whether they come from the left or the right or the twilight zone. We'll post the most entertaining ones.
For our inaugural submission, we are going all the way to 2007 to quote from a Letter to the Editor in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Connie writes: "As you know, Daylight Savings Time started almost a month early this year. You would think that members of Congress would have considered the effect that an extra hour of daylight would have on our climate."

NYIT: LIPA and NYIT Partner to Research Solar Carports that Charge Electric, Hybrid Cars
New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) are partners on a project that will study the use of solar carports, located on NYIT's Old Westbury campus and Central Islip site, in charging electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Each NYIT location currently has a solar carport installation, constructed by EmPower CES, that generates up to 10 kilowatts of electric power and can charge several vehicles at the same time. The systems qualified for a LIPA solar rebate of approximately $90,000.

Yale University, Center for Business and the Environment: Yale Scores as a Top Green U.S. MBA Programs
BusinessWeek: Michigan, Yale Score as Top Green U.S. MBA Programs
Notably absent are most of the perennial top dogs of BW’s MBA ranking: Harvard, University of Pennsylvania Wharton, Northwestern and Chicago are all no shows here. It won’t be long before they join the fray I bet, since students are showing increased interest in sustainability, social responsibility, and energy systems. The number of b-schools who took part in the survey has surged by 25% in the past three years. And among b-schools offering classes with some degree of social, environmental, or ethical focus, Beyond Grey Pinstripes reports that the number of such eco-themed classes has grown by a third, on average, in five years. With seven of the top 10 spots, US schools dominate the survey:
