Emerging Sectors Education ConsortiumThe Emerging Sectors Education Consortium comprised of 10 colleges has joined the Green Collar Association. Out of the 10 member schools and institutions, the pilot membership includes Oakland Community College, Schoolcraft Community College, Baker College, Oakland University, Walsh College and St. Clair Community College. The Consortium received a two-year grant from the US, Department of Labor and has goals to ensure collaboration and alignment of strategies to connect students with training and jobs. Their efforts have also included curriculum development, a portable lab for experiential learning for high school students, providing sub-grants to its participants along with soft skill programming for a pilot group of participants. Southern California Edison Throws Switch on Seven New Neighborhood Solar StationsSeven new solar power plants capable of providing electricity for 8,125 average homes are now online for Southern California Edison (SCE) customers, the utility announced today. The newest solar photovoltaic installations, located in Ontario and Redlands, Calif., have a combined peak generating capacity of 12.5 million watts (AC). The new plants bring to 10 the number of SCE neighborhood solar stations. >> Read more

Sustainable. To Student Choice Award OCADU StudentsWHAT - An award for the student chosen by his/her peers who best displayed excellence in terms of sustainability and conscious design in his/her school projects over the course of the 2010-11 academic year.
HOW - Participants will be asked to submit one 11x17" PDF containing a maximum of 3 images and 100 words to display and describe the project/projects that was/were assigned and completed as part of their program requirements (i.e. no extracurricular work will be accepted). Participants must register (for free) to submit their work and/or to vote. The voting period will consist of a one-week period before the end of term when registered voters may view and then choose their favorite conscious designs. The three students whose work earns the most votes will each win a cash prize, to be awarded at a reception. >> Read more

Center for American Progress: Innovating to Meet the President’s Goal of 80 Percent Clean Electricity by 2035Setting a clear and stable goal is essential to organize the American clean energy market, and focus capital investors firmly on innovation. For this reason, the Center for American Progress applauds the president’s call for an 80-percent clean energy standard by 2035 and recommends that the standard include a requirement that 35 percent of America’s energy needs will be met by truly renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2035. This internal goal of “35 by ‘35” within the clean energy standard, will ensure the growth of strong markets for technologies like wind, solar, sustainable biomass, incremental hydro-electric power, and geothermal energy, as well as the most effective solutions for reducing energy demand though energy efficiency. CAP believes strongly that such a target is essential for a strong and effective clean energy standard. >> Read more

New Green Marketing Claims guide released in UK, with support from Five WindsThe UK's Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) published its new Green Claims Guidance document "to help companies describe the environmental credentials of their products in a way that people find easier to understand. The Guidance is designed to help consumers make more informed judgements about what they buy, prevent misleading claims and encourage the development of greener products." >> Read more

LEED Platinum certification for Johnson Controls headquarters campus buildingsThe Johnson Controls headquarters campus at Glendale, Wisconsin now has the largest concentration of buildings on one campus to ever receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification. LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council rates buildings on how well they save energy and water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve indoor environmental quality and their overall environmental impact.
