As people age they become more dependant on their environment to compensate for increasing frailty and sensory loss. Appropriate lighting conditions help maximize personal independence, while promoting health, well-being, and safety. This 4- hour interactive online course discusses the physiological and neurological changes that occur in the eye and brain, and addresses the special lighting needs of the aging population. Special attention is given to lighting quality and design, as well as environmental factors that should be addressed to provide a safe and comfortable living area for the visually impaired.
Learning Objectives •Describe the physiological changes in the visual system as people age •Define the two categories of visual disability in the elderly (pre-retinal dysfunction and retinal dysfunction), and their individual lighting needs •Explain how the quality of lighting contributes to improved quality of life and prevention of injuries •Discuss area-specific lighting solutions for areas within different types of residential dwellings •Describe ways to save energy and enhance safety •Recall ways to incorporate daylighting into housing
