What's Hot In Washington & Ottawa
Climate legislation comes to a screeching stop: The bi-partisan climate change bill authored by Senators Lieberman, Kerry, and Graham is now in jeopardy as the Republican member of the group, Senator Graham, says he won't move forward due to frustration with the broader legislative agenda of the Democrats.

Niche-Market Opportunities in Carbon
By Joseph Tohill, Green Collar Association Staff Writer
The primary objective of carbon markets is to establish a more accurate means of accounting for the costs of carbon emissions. This is accomplished through setting a certain threshold for emissions – companies that surpass this threshold must purchase carbon-offsets to bring their emissions down. This also creates an excellent opportunity for the establishment of a niche market in the sale of carbon-offsets. Businesses can specialize in activities that reduce carbon concentrations in the atmosphere, and then sell these reductions to other businesses.

What is HOMESTAR and can it make a home run?
By: Anran Luo, Green Collar Association Staff Writer
The Obama administration recently introduced HOMESTAR, a program of consumer rebates for home energy efficiency retrofits that boasts a foolproof outcome.
HOMESTAR will provide homeowners with direct rebates at the moment of purchase for various energy-saving renovations to their homes. The Silver Star Rebates provides 50% rebates up to $1000 – $1500 for simple upgrades for features such as insulation, duct sealing, water heaters, HVAC units, windows, roofing and doors. The Gold Star Rebates is valued at $3000 and rewards more thorough retrofits with the goal of reaching 20% energy savings in their homes; additional rebate are available for energy savings beyond 20%.

Oh Canada?
By: Victoria Biernacik, Green Collar Association Staff Writer
Where does Canada stand in regards to reducing emissions, and showing the world that we are taking climate change seriously?
What we know:
Canada’s emissions only account for two per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet on a per capita basis, our country ranks seventh in the world. These emissions are estimated to come from six sectors: energy, industrial processes, solvents and other product use, agriculture, land-use change and forestry, and waste (Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions).
Canada has also been warming at a much faster rate than other countries around the world, with serious implications for our Arctic environment, forests, coastlines, and general weather patterns.

Aquaculture. What’s in a name?
By: Paul Kleving, Green Collar Association Staff Writer
Fish farming or aquaculture, has been around for centuries, but only in the last few decades has the practice of farming fish exploded into the global market place. Farmed fish accounts for over 25% of all fish consumed on the planet, but as the world’s appetite for fish increases, so does the environmental impact of farming. One major problem with fish farming is that there are few clear guidelines and regulations in place to ensure safe and responsible business practices. Farming is not technically fishing, therefore not subject to the same rules that the fishing industry must follow.

ISO 14001 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) through dedicated technical committees representing approximately 150 countries around the world. Its purpose is to enable an organization of any type or size to develop and implement a policy committing it to prevention of pollution, compliance with legal and other requirements, and continual improvement.
The realization of this commitment will be a management system that recognizes and manages the primary environmental issues through awareness and assessment of applicable legal requirements, objectives for improvement, assignment of responsibilities, competent personnel, communications, procedures, controls and monitoring, emergency response capability, self correction and assessment, and internal reviews.
